APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY BEGINS NEW ERA WITH BIG RIVAL
Appalachian State plays Michigan for FBS season opener
July 1, 2014 - Appalachian State University opens the new FBS era in Ann Arbor at Michigan Stadium, on Saturday, Aug. 30. Appalachian joins nine teams in the Sun Belt Conference and will compete for the opportunity to play in bowl games for the first time in school history.
By opening against Michigan, the Mountaineers hope to prove their power and presence in the Sun Belt to their new competitors and their fans.
Chancellor Ken Peacock is excited and enthusiastic about how moving into the FBS will benefit the school, “Playing Michigan will get the buzz out about what a great program we have here and how we continue to grow! I hope to see a lot more fans at homes games this year and even in Ann Arbor! Especially the alumni!”
Formally known as Division 1-A, there are over 120 full members in the FBS. As an FBS school, Appalachian is now able to compete in bowl games and potentially for the BCS National Championship, however this fall they will only be able to compete for the Sun Belt championship. They will have to wait until 2015 in order to be eligible to compete in bowl games along with new Sun Belt Conference member and old Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern.
Appalachian hopes that current students, alumni, and fans alike support the Mountaineers in Ann Arbor at Michigan Stadium as well as home games this fall. A time for the game is yet to be announced but will be released when available.
